Within the Nibelung-Volsung tradition, much attention has been devoted to the legendary treasure (Nibelungenhort, hodd Niflungar) whose connections to myth and sorcery, sometimes taken for granted, are nonetheless recorded only in some Old Norse texts. Regardless of its size, from a single little chest to an amount that fills up a mountain cave, the magical Nibelungenhort is a powerful catalyst for some of the worse human actions (familiar betrayals, murders, blood-vengeance) aimed at its possession, but doomed to failure. Closely linked to the nature and amount of the Nibelung treasure is the question, so far neglected, of its final destiny and, more specifically, of its disappearance. On this, extant sources remain vague, leaving us with many unanswered questions. This topic, which deserves further consideration, could benefit from an investigation of the Walthersage and skaldic poetry.
