Abstract

This book proposes an unprecedentedly refined chronology for the Mycenaean palaces of the Greek mainland and discusses its meaning for our understanding of the socio-political organization of the Aegean, ca. 1375-1175 B.C.E. The results of this research suggest that the Mycenaean palaces were interconnected but independent polities. Their ‘international’ role as the most powerful states in the Aegean began after the major destruction that struck Knossos at an advanced stage of the 14th century B.C.E. The collapse of the Mycenaean palaces was a gradual process, which took place ca. 1230-1175 B.C.E. The acme of the Mycenaean palaces thus occurred later than traditionally assumed and was both short-lived and unstable.
