Abstract

The article guide into a city of stone, carved reliefs, patere and mosaics. A medieval bestiary emerges, inhabited by griffins, mermaids, winged lions and dragons. These creatures are not ornamental; they speak. They tell stories of belief and fear, of justice and authority. The lion of Saint Mark becomes the emblem of a city with imperial ambitions. The reliefs where a griffin overcomes an elephant remind us that architecture, too, can carry allegory. For those who walk attentively, the city reveals itself as a book to be read, if one learns to understand the language of its stones.
