The dialects of Rogliano, Bastia, Isola Rossa and Ajaccio are investigated, among other sources, in F.D. Falcucci's Saggi illustrati moderni di dialetti côrsi (1875), in the ALEIC (points 1, 5, 7, 36) and in the NALC (points 261, 033, 134, 004). The paper surveys the most salient facts concerning a number of lexemes and of phono-morphological and syntactic phenomena that can be drawn from the texts and notes of the Saggi. The analysis is preceded by an examination of the spelling adopted in the Saggi illustrati, compared with the corresponding forms in P.E. Guarnerio's edition of the Vocabolario (Falcucci 1915) and with the Marchetti-Geronimi system (1971). It then examines, within the framework of the genetic relationships among Corsican stressed vowel systems, the outcomes of -AU- in the dialect of Rogliano; dwells on the generalisation of the -ede preterite in the dialect of Bastia; observes how the micro-syntax of the clitic cluster works according to the direction of cliticisation; and develops some stratigraphic remarks, in an onomasiological perspective, on the Corsican terms for 'waking up', as well as an etymological note on Ajaccian (nun avia) busticatu '(had not) moved'. In doing so, it draws on the data of the main Corsican linguistic atlases, the ALEIC and the NALC, as well as on the areal observations provided by Falcucci and on other useful data found in his works. Through comparison, carried out synchronically in an inter-dialectal perspective and diachronically in an intra-dialectal one, the paper aims to bring out congruences and discontinuities in linguistic phenomena over a span of more than a century, so as to highlight, on the one hand, the specificity and originality of the founder of Corsican dialectology and, on the other, the lasting contributions he secured to the scholarly tradition.
