The question of dialects : traveling towards the Southern Lazio of Rohlfs and Scheuermeier · In the period between the Risorgimento and the Great War, dialects and dialectology played an important role in defining both our national identity and Italy’s state borders. The memory of these facts has been lost since fascism and its anti-dialect policies, making some of our fathers’ choices opaque to us contemporaries. In order to regain contact with this reality, a path is proposed, divided into three stages (Porta Pia, the social question, the Great War), which brings together dialectology and anthropology, disciplines which in these decades have followed parallel paths and were destined to cross these paths in the crea- tion of the AIS, the Italo-Swiss Atlas. Particular attention is paid to the relations that both of them had with politics in order to have the most concrete impact possible on the construction of the unitary state. The youthful events of Rohlfs and Scheuermeier, the two main collectors of the AIS, provide the framework within which to present the role that dialects and dialectology played in Italy prior to their fundamental work of collection and research.

Abstract
The youthful events of Rohlfs and Scheuermeier, the two main collectors of the AIS, provide the framework within which to present the role that dialects and dialectology played in Italy prior to their fundamental work of collection and research.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
