This article investigates how Euripides’ Bacchae mobilizes the audience’ s ritual competence to construct and render intelligible dramatic space. Rather than pointing to specific festivals, ritual language, performative imperatives, and patterns of movement activate shared cultural knowledge, enabling spectators to configure a dynamic spatial system that exceeds the visible stage. The interaction between scenic and extrascenic domains emerges as a central dramaturgical device, through which the play articulates the relationshipbetween civic space, ritual practice, and collective imagination.

Abstract
This article investigates how Euripides’ Bacchae mobilizes the audience’ s ritual competence to construct and render intelligible dramatic space. Rather than pointing to specific festivals, ritual language, performative imperatives, and patterns of movement activate shared cultural knowledge, enabling spectators to configure a dynamic spatial system that exceeds the visible stage. The interaction between scenic and extrascenic domains emerges as a central dramaturgical device, through which the play articulates the relationshipbetween civic space, ritual practice, and collective imagination.File in questo prodotto:
