This contribution examines the relationship between law, religion, and environmental emergencies, drawing on the findings of the PRIN 2022 research project Religion and Emergency Rules. Starting from the transformation of contemporary emergencies into structural and enduring conditions, it explores the risks associated with the normalization of extraordinary legal measures and the resulting restrictions on fundamental rights. From this perspective, sustainability is understood as an interpretative framework capable of integrating the environmental, social, and institutional dimensions of crises, while emphasizing intergenerational responsibility. Particular attention is devoted to the role of religious traditions, whose spiritual dimension can contribute to fostering shared responsibilities, practices of care, and sustainable forms of coexistence. The contribution thus highlights the need to rethink legal responses to prolonged crises by combining the protection of fundamental rights, sustainability, and the public role of religious communities.
