The distribution of the Latin nominal suffixes -IES e -IA is analyzed in detail. The data show that the second suffix (i.e. -IA) is very frequent and productive in Latin as well as in Romance languages, whereas the distribution of the other morpheme (i.e. -IES) is is very limited and becomes more and more marginal through the history of the Latin language. The hypothesis of a 'Phonological Bootstrapping' recently proposed by 'Prosodic Phonology' does not account for the selection of the two suffixes. Morphological constraints appear to be stronger than the supposed prosodic ones.

Abstract
The distribution of the Latin nominal suffixes -IES e -IA is analyzed in detail. The data show that the second suffix (i.e. -IA) is very frequent and productive in Latin as well as in Romance languages, whereas the distribution of the other morpheme (i.e. -IES) is is very limited and becomes more and more marginal through the history of the Latin language. The hypothesis of a 'Phonological Bootstrapping' recently proposed by 'Prosodic Phonology' does not account for the selection of the two suffixes. Morphological constraints appear to be stronger than the supposed prosodic ones.File in questo prodotto:
