The paper argues that the text of Afran. 95-6 R3 should be altered from quid ais to quid est. The emendation is supported by a reconstruction of the fragment’s dialogic context in the light of both comic stage conventions and Latin linguistic usage. Address and linguistic politeness conventions in Latin are referred to throughout the paper as tools to enlighten comic characters’ interaction in dialogue.
