Durability of companies over time constitutes one of the prior objectives of capitalistic socio-economic systems. This paper aims at identifying how the management of repeated entrepreneurial succession processes influences the longevity of family SMEs through the strengthening of their distinctive competences. We regard to each generation passage as an opportunity to reflect upon consistency and adequacy of competences sustaining the firm competitive edge. This research is based on a qualitative, interpretative and explicative approach. Our purpose, in this step, is primarily to give cognitive and interpretative results with possible theoretical and practical implications. The empirical investigation has been conducted on six exemplary cases of long lasting family firms which are over a hundred years old. They are small and medium in size and they belong to the industrial sector situated in central Italy. The theoretical framework of the present research constitutes fundamentally two strands of organisational and managerial literature centred upon entrepreneurial succession in family SMEs and upon distinctive competence of the latter, respectively.
