Innovation is nowadays one of the major source of competitive advantage that can be achieved and maintained over time by the companies. This situation is further reinforced if the new developments are rooted in tradition, linked to the territory. In this way the innovation can to acquire unique and distinctive connotations. This paper examines the results of an empirical research on these topics conducted on a small sample of micro firms in the agri-food sector in the province of Pisa, that can be defined “best practices”. These company have recently adopted innovative solutions and in recent years have experienced good economic performance. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the development paths of these companies, identifying common features and trends.
