After a premise about the main sources used (Cassius Dio, Herodian, Historia Augusta), the analysis of the "coup d'état" in AD 193, which removed Commodus and gave the imperial power to Pertinax, shows that the conspirators, when chose Septimius Severus, Pescennius Niger, and Clodius Albinus as governors of the main three provinces (Upper Pannonia, Syria and Britain), were illusionated on the election of men with very few courage, without experience or military prestige and so that unable to try a military uprisingn with their legions. The analysis of Severus' career before his imperial acclamation, mediocre and without significative military commands, compared with Pertinax' career, confirms this conclusion. Rather, Severus founded his power on the army thanks to his political talent.

Abstract
Rather, Severus founded his power on the army thanks to his political talent.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
