The study presents an advanced mathematical wear model of soft on hard hip implants, aimed at defining a more reliable simulation tool. It introduces further developments into an existing model, as far as the evaluation of sliding distance and contact pressure is concerned. Two different loading conditions were considered: a complete 3D gait cycle and the ISO standard wear test simulation. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of geometrical parameters, such as cup radius and clearance, on the wear volume.

Abstract

The study presents an advanced mathematical wear model of soft on hard hip implants, aimed at defining a more reliable simulation tool. It introduces further developments into an existing model, as far as the evaluation of sliding distance and contact pressure is concerned. Two different loading conditions were considered: a complete 3D gait cycle and the ISO standard wear test simulation. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of geometrical parameters, such as cup radius and clearance, on the wear volume.
