The focus of fragmentary mythological Ugaritic tablet KTU 1.101 is the deity Baal. A new translation and philological commentary is presented in this article. The epigraphic and linguistic issues, as well as the methodology of translating ancient Near Eastern literary documents, are discussed. The unusual depiction of Baal as a ‘mountain’ is highlighted and associated with the motif ‘Yahwe, my rock’ in the Old Testament.
