Some Samnitic bronze belt (IV-III century B.C.) are characterized by cicada-shaped hooks. All hitherto proposed explanations are unsatisfactory. Perhaps they had the same symbolic meaning of the golden cicada-shaped brooches of the old aristocratic Athenians described by Thucydides, Aristophanes, Aelianus and Athenaeus.
