While initially, since the publication of Menzogna e sortilegio and for more than a decade, she looked brilliantly integrated into the national, and, more specifically, Roman, socio-cultural environment, later on things changed. The writer’s attitude towards the mass media progressively deteriorated, until she decided to retreat from social life. After the early 1960s, Elsa decided to communicate with the public exclusively through her works, meticulously controlling their editions and reprints, while her appearances in public and on newspapers became rare. At the same time, she devised an «existential autobiography», that, through a careful management of information, would progressively become an “authorial project”, useful to lead readers to a “clarifying” understanding of her works.
