This paper forms a further part of the study regarding global change in progress in the Mediterranean, following the guidelines of the Italian "Human Dimensions" programme (HDP-Italy. It represents the natural continuation of the group research project "Urban Change", which chose the coastal belt of the north-western Mediterranean as its object of study. Using a diachronic approach, the study analysed the changes that occurred in this area during the two decades between 1971 and 1991, focusing its attention on three main aspects: land use, development of moto vehicle traffic and spatial planning .
