The aim of this work is to examine a series of phenomena of growth, change and pressure which has characterised the evolution of the coastal belt of the developed and developing Mediterranean countries in recent decades. In other words, this study attempts to discuss the temporal and spatial evolution of some indicators (population, housing, tourism, industry, traffic) that well illustrate the most important factors currently affecting this coastal system, clearly showing the growing competition for land use in an area which is in itself limited. An analysis of spatial dynamics, which indludes, on the one hand, the relations between the forms of urbanisation and different economic growth models and, on the other, environmental sustainability, could stimulate the strengthening of integrated coastal planning policies in general.

Abstract
The aim of this work is to examine a series of phenomena of growth, change and pressure which has characterised the evolution of the coastal belt of the developed and developing Mediterranean countries in recent decades. In other words, this study attempts to discuss the temporal and spatial evolution of some indicators (population, housing, tourism, industry, traffic) that well illustrate the most important factors currently affecting this coastal system, clearly showing the growing competition for land use in an area which is in itself limited. An analysis of spatial dynamics, which indludes, on the one hand, the relations between the forms of urbanisation and different economic growth models and, on the other, environmental sustainability, could stimulate the strengthening of integrated coastal planning policies in general.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
