Vanadyl phosphate (VOP) was used as catalyst for dehydration of fructose aq. solns. to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde. Promising results in terms of activity and selectivity were achieved. Substitution with trivalent Fe, Cr, Ga, Mn and Al also was studied. Fe-substituted VOP showed the highest activity in the dehydration reaction.
