Three Dimensional Printing (3DP) is a layered manufacturing (LM) or solid freeform fabrication (SFF) technique known more as rapid prototyping (RP). With this technology, functional parts or moulds (rapid tooling) can be created directly from a CAD file. Surface finish is the major technological constraint on its widespread utilization. In this paper, a methodology for the process optimization with new material systems is proposed. It includes a classification of line defects, based on objective criteria, and remedying. Methods to perform specific laboratory tests and measures are also provided. The proposed approach has been successfully applied to two typical cases that are described in detail: the 3DP of alumina and stainless steel powders.
