We modify the standard heat bath algorithm for SU(2) by implementing the conditions which minimizes the trace of the new link with the hermitian conjugate of the old. The resulting algorithm incorporates the advantages of overrelaxed algorithms and of the standard heat bath: we test its efficiency by measuring the computer time correlations of local quantities like the plaquette and of extended ones, like the correlation of Polyakov loops. The extension to larger SU(N) groups can be made by correspondingly modifying the Cabibbo-Marinari algorithm.
