The first occurrence of chalcomenite in Italy is reported from the Baccu Locci mine, Sardinia. Morphological, optical, and structural data are given for the mineral. Chalcomenite, CuSeO3•2H2O, is orthorhombic, space group P212121, with a = 6.666(1), b = 9.169(2), c = 7.373(1) Å. The structural refinement converged to R = 0.036m Rw = 0.029 for 1109 unique reflections collected with graphite-monochromated MoK-alpha radiation. The structure of chalcomenite is similar to that of synthetic CuSeO3•2H2O. Its structural relationship with the monoclinic polymorph of CuSeO3•2H2O are discussed.
