The presence of a neutralising agent for N-acetyl-cysteine that does not negatively affect the composition osmolarity allows the formulation to be isotonic or even hypotonic, thus avoiding the irritative and potentially damaging effects of previous ophthalmic products containing N-acetyl-cysteine.
