A proper treatment is developed of gauge theories in the temporal gauge A0=0. The residual gauge freedom, which is the origin of well-known troubles in this gauge, is shown to factorize out of the physical amplitudes. A detailed treatment is given for the abelian case. Higgs phenomenon is analysed in this context.
