By following the practical approach adopted by the archaeological and geological team for the determi- nation of archaeological potential, page rank models – currently used for classifying search engines web pages – appear to be suitable for determining the archaeological potential of the urban area of Pisa. The reason for this lies in the fact that the importance of a find is not absolute but basically depends on ‘nearby’ finds, which attribute importance to it: this is the same criterion implemented for page ranking. This report will briefly describe the classic page rank model and show how it may be applied to the determination of archaeological potential. Furthermore, we will also present a simpler model based on smoothing of the available data, which will be compared to the page rank-based model. The two different models will be tested via simulations.
