In this paper we investigate the dynamics of an Italian SME innovation network, consisting of six small- and micro-sized firms operating in the hightechnology sector. The study pursues explorative goals and is longitudinal in nature. We intend to shed light on the choices concerning coordination roles and their effectiveness both in facing challenges during the start-up and in achieving innovation goals in the long run. At the operational level, the findings of our analysis stress the opportunities associated with the presence of multiple coordination roles. Instead, on a theoretical level our research highlights the limitations of the ex-ante network design in favour of networking processes and emerging organizational strategies.

Abstract
In this paper we investigate the dynamics of an Italian SME innovation network, consisting of six small- and micro-sized firms operating in the hightechnology sector. The study pursues explorative goals and is longitudinal in nature. We intend to shed light on the choices concerning coordination roles and their effectiveness both in facing challenges during the start-up and in achieving innovation goals in the long run. At the operational level, the findings of our analysis stress the opportunities associated with the presence of multiple coordination roles. Instead, on a theoretical level our research highlights the limitations of the ex-ante network design in favour of networking processes and emerging organizational strategies.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
