In Novalis’s "Klingsohr´s Märchen", the element of the chessboard performs a very precise function, as it subsumes and represents the playful ratio behind the narrative. This paper offers an interpretation of this narration that aims to account for this precise aspect, basing on the early Romantics’ reflection on the intrinsically playful nature of poetry, language and knowledge.
