Toniolo’s concept of democracy is analysed on the basis of his famous essay «Il concetto cristiano della democrazia», published in 1897 by the «Rivista internazionale di scienze sociali e discipline ausiliarie». Toniolo’s modernizing influence on the evolution of the Italian catholic movement, before and after Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum, is also pointed out, considering the positive impact of his ideas and initiatives on catholic leaders and organizations, and the social doctrine of the Church.
