The 1:1 molar reaction of WCl6 with tribenzylamine selectively affords equimolar amounts of the relevant iminium and ammonium [WCl6]− salts via amine-to-tungsten electron transfer and provides a rare example of well-understood interaction of a tertiary amine with a high-valent metal halide.
