This article deals with the theme of the loss of the shieldin the newly discovered fragment of Archilochus (P.Oxy. 4708 fr. 1)and the consequent relationship between this new fragment and fr.5 W2, by analysing a passage of Philostratus’ Heroicus in which Telephus is depicted losing his shield.
