The effect of low temperature on embryogenic ability and somatic embryo conversion was studied in quince BA29 leaves. Two treatments were applied: exposure to 4C for 10 days in darkness starting 10, 20 and 30 days after induction in 2,4-D; and exposure throughout the trial period to alternating temperatures of 21C during light and 12C during darkness. Results for the first treatment showed greatest embryo production per leaf with the 4C treatment applied 10 d after induction. Embryogenic leaf percentage decreased progressively with increasing delay of initiation of treatment. The alternating temperature treatment exerted a negative effect on both parameters considered.
