The IFAC World Congress is a forum of excellence for exploration at the frontiers of control science and technology, attended by a worldwide audience of scientists and engineers from academia and industry. The conference provides an up-to-date and comprehensive picture of control techniques, with a wide coverage of application fields. The 18th IFAC World Congress was held in Milano, Italy, from August 28 to September 2, 2011, approximately half a century after the 1st Congress in Moscow. The conference brought together over 2800 attendees from 73 countries who participated in one or more of the ∼350 sessions that were held at the Congress. The articles included in this special issue are based upon papers which were presented at the IFAC World Congress. These papers were part of the program for Track 6.1: Chemical Process Control, Track 6.2: Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing, or Track 8.4: Biosystems and Bioprocesses. The selection process involved the evaluations made by the reviewers for the IFAC World Congress papers and the track chairs. The authors of the identified papers were then asked to submit a journal paper which was based upon their conference contribution. The invited articles for this special issue then underwent the same review process as regular JPC articles. We believe that these papers cover a range of topics of interest to the control community at large and to the readers of this journal in particular. We are grateful to JPC for allowing us to assemble this special issue covering the 2011 IFAC World Congress.
