This study aims to evaluate the accuracy in predicting viscoelastic response of asphalt pavements through the comparison of theoretical strain and stress waves with experimental data recorded on several in-service instrumented pavement sections. Test sections were built by using both traditional and innovative materials, and were instrumented in order to evaluate the structural performance over time, to monitor environmental parameters and the main characteristics of traffic spectrum. Viscoelastic parameters of asphalt concrete layers were determined by tests carried out on cores extracted from test pavements; a theoretical procedure to calculate the parameters of the visco-elastic model from pulse loading tests is proposed as well as a rational approach for the evaluation of accuracy in predicting pavement response by the comparison between recorded and simulated data. The analysis pointed out the viscoelastic parameters determined by the proposed procedure allow to predict satisfactorily the visco-elastic behavior of asphalt pavements. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.
