The paper presents a second-law and thermodynamic analysis of the Kalina cycle, aiming at discovering the effects of the composition of the working fluid, of the temperature of the exhaust gases, and of the boiler pressure. Recent investigations of Kalina (1988) and El-Sayed (1985b) are completed with an overall analysis of exergetic losses in various working situations. An original computer program KALCYC has been developed for this purpose. The results have shown the very high exergetic efficiency and specific power that the Kalina cycle can provide, and the possibility of an optimization for each available heat source. A brief comparison has also been made with the Rankine cycle as far as practical advantages are concerned.
