The survey of some of the most significant architectures located in the citadel (Kala) of Elbasan was realized during the most extensive INTERLINK (2005-2007) research program. The existence and activity of the church dedicated to Saint Mary during the second half of the XVII century (1656-1661) is attested by accounting books. Nevertheless, the present-day church is the result of an almost total reconstruction that took place between the years 1826-1833 following a fire in 1819, which destroyed most of the original structure.
