In the present paper, we examine the opposition between the Greek motion verbs εἶμι and ἔρχομαι, with the aim of accounting for the middle voice of ἔρχομαι. We show that middle voice is selected only when the verb includes a state predicate in its logical structure: this is the case of ἔρχομαι, but not of εἶμι. Evidence is provided and discussed on the relationship between the Indo European middle voice and Unaccusativity, from a functional-semantic perspective.
