The present study examines the validity of diagnostic criteria for bingeeating disorder (BED) in morbidly obese persons. The sample included 118 morbidly obese individuals (IMC ³ 40). The participants were classified into 1 of 3 groups according to the Mental Disorders-IV research criteria for BED: binge-eating disorder (n = 21), subthreshold BED (n = 26), and non-BED (n = 71). The groups were compared on measures of psychopathology, anxiety, depression, concerns about body shape, eating and weight-related habits and attitudes, and quality of life. Few differences were found between subthreshold and full-syndrome BED, raising questions about the diagnostic validity of the frequency threshold. BED subjects differed from the non-BED obese group on variables related to dieting but did not differ significatly on other important variables, including measures of general psychopathology, anxiety, depression, and body image disturbance. The severity of psychopathology is not related to binge-eating disorder but rather to the weight.
