Tuwim’s poetry, so rich in versification, rhymes and rhythms, is written in a language, that “vibrated, spouted, dazzled”. Can his poetry be appropriately translated? Or should it be considered to be untranslatable, as stated by more than one scholar? This paper tries to answer these questions by juxtaposing Italian translations of Tuwim’s poetry from the Twenties of the XX century to the present day. It also addresses the problem of preserving and seeking equivalents for Tuwim’s specific “contamination” of styles, registers and rhythms in the Italian poetic tradition.
