This article explains what the Environmental Kuznets Curve is, how was it born, what are its theoretical underpinnings, and the findings of the empirical literature. It discusses the main weaknesses of the debate, also highlighting an inconsistency that has been ignored so far. This article is not a survey of the literature. Rather, it attempts to provide a systematic and original presentation of (hopefully) all the ingredients of a fairy tale, telling us that economic growth will eventually result in environmental improvement.
