This essay focuses on Paolo Givio, a key figure in the field of italian emblematics, both as author of the first treatise to discuss the theoretical principles governing the writing of the perfect impresa (Dialogo delle imprese militari e amorose, printed in 1555), and as a creator and collector of devices. Giovio's work is closely related to his other project connected with imprese, the Museum, now lost, a villa which indeed included a gallery of paintings of illustrious personages, but that was also a monument of self- commemoration, in its use, as a decoration for several parts of the building, of personal imprese devised by Giovio himself and linked to various episodes of his life. The two project are both designed to celebrate Giovio's skill as inventor of imprese.
