The paper analyzes one of the most interesting iconographies of Fortuna, the so-called "Tuche of Bupalo". The text shows how some bizarre iconography of XVI century are derived for misunderstanding of the greek word "polos" present in a famous description of Pausanias, whose various translations (axis, hinge, foal) resulted in unusual allegorical figures.
