Seen in a historical perspective, work has undergone dramatic changes. As a consequence, different work configurations emerge. Conducting a cluster analysis based on empirical data, we show the existence of these working configurations and we describe them accordingly to the flexibility allowed by firms regarding: (i) the place where work is accomplished, (ii) the time during which conducting the work activities, (iii) the arrangements of the organizational space in which jobs are done and (iv) the tools used to accomplish them—especially Information Systems. On these premises, we found that different work configurations co-exist and are inherently diverse.

Abstract

Seen in a historical perspective, work has undergone dramatic changes. As a consequence, different work configurations emerge. Conducting a cluster analysis based on empirical data, we show the existence of these working configurations and we describe them accordingly to the flexibility allowed by firms regarding: (i) the place where work is accomplished, (ii) the time during which conducting the work activities, (iii) the arrangements of the organizational space in which jobs are done and (iv) the tools used to accomplish them—especially Information Systems. On these premises, we found that different work configurations co-exist and are inherently diverse.
