We investigated the distribution and extension of factors VIIIR: Ag in human placentas of patients affected by Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR), bearing in mind the implications of the organ in this pathology. Our data show that factor VIIIR: Ag can be demonstrated both in normal and in pathological placentas by means of an immunohistochemical method utilizing a polyclonal antibody. In all investigated areas (wall, lumen, stroma and intervillous area) the degree of staining was higher in controls than in patients. On the basis of our results, we may hypothesize that chronic placental ischemia subsequent to the restriction of uteroplacental blood-flow causes metabolic lesions of the endothelial cells and that there exists a direct relationship between the reduced or absent synthesis of FVIIIR:RAg and the progressive endothelial damage.
