Abstract

Within two years, 1877-1878, two different Italian translations of J.E. Cairnes’ Principles were published. It was quite astonishing for a small market like the Italian one. Sonnino and Fontanellì, two Italian scholars who translated the first edition of Principles, chose Cairnes’ book and Thornton's On Labour, to support their political agenda. On the contrary, the second Italian translation was published in the Library of the Economists series, edited by Gerolamo Boccardo. The fourth volume of this series was dedicated to the methodological problems of political economy, translating Cairnes’ works on this topic. Principles were added, most likely, to offer a wider framework of Cairnes’ thought to Italian reader.
