Au-mica substrates were treated with a hydrogen flame and immersed in EtOH in order to a low proper surface cleaning and reconstruction prior to deposition. In order to minimize systematic errors the XMCD spectrum was obtained by recording XAS with all possible combinations of field polarity and light circular polarization. The dichroic signal was found to vary in time and the data was satisfactorily reproduced with a single exponential decay.

Abstract

Thin films made of two different Single Molecule Magnets (SMM) were examined using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD)at sub-Kelvin temperatures to investigate their surface properties. Mn12O 12(O2CR)16(H20)4] (RCO2H = 4 (methylthio)benzoic acid) and [Fe4(L) 2(dpm)6] (H3 = L 11-(acetylthio)-2, 2 bis(hydroxymethyl) undecay n-1-ol; Hdpm dipivaloylmethane) were synthesized. Pure, crystalline samples were dissolved in dichloromethane to give δ10-3 M solutions.
