The polyolefins are copolymers of ethylene with alkyl (meth)acrylates, prepd. using a catalyst comprising Ni complexes with substituted salicylate ligands and an organoaluminum co-catalyst. The Ni complex is Ni(II)-bis(3,5-dinitro)-N-(2,6-isopropylphenyl)salicylaldiminato, and Ni(II)-bis(3,5-dinitro)-N-(phenyl)-salicylaldiminato and the cocatalysts are aluminoxanes. The polymn. is carried out in an inert solvent under 10-50 bar pressure at 120-260°.
