The Italian Risorgimento is a national movement that flourished on the Italian Peninsula during the first half of the nineteenth century and led to the establishment of a unitary Italian state (1859–61). The movement conceived the idea of a nation founded on three main principles: the Italian nation as a community of origin (blood, land, language); as a gendered community (heroic fighting men/chaste wives and mothers); and as a sacrificial community. This conception is conveyed by popular narratives spread by means of historic novels, collections of poetry, paintings, prints, and above all melodramas.
