In the past, conventional surgical procedures for treatment of single bone cysts (curettage and bone grafting through a limited cortical window) were not satisfactory, showing a recurrence rate around 30-40%. Only a more aggressive surgical approach (hemi or total subperiosteal resection of the cystic wall) allowed a decreased recurrence rate to 5-8%. Regrdless of the performed procedure, surgery presents several disadvantages (prolonged immobilizationa and hospitalization; surgical scars) and may have major complications (grow plate injury – infection). In 1974 Scaglietti introduced local injections of methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) as treatment of simple bone cysts. Many authors, with this simple, non invasive procedure reported clinical and radiographical results comparable, or even better, than those obtained with surgery.
