This article focuses on «Die literarische Welt», a German literary magazine edited by Willy Haas from 1925 until 1933, which is to be considered one of the principal channels of expression for German literary modernism in the interwar period. The starting point of this investigation is Haas' differentiation between "commercium" (trade) and "connubium" (marriage) in literature. This dualism reflects the international flair and the inclusive policy that characterize the journal's editorial board. In such a cosmopolitan context, particular attention is paid to the foreign contributors to the magazine and to the selective, but at the same time open editorial practice adopted by the periodical in spite of the ideological commitments assumed by German intellectuals during the Weimar Republic. A discussion of three major contributors to «Die literarische Welt» (Benjamin, Curtius, H. Mann) then clarifies the exemplary position that the magazine maintains in the modern culture of the time. The concept of German Moderne is thus re-considered in the wider context of European modernism.

Abstract
The concept of German Moderne is thus re-considered in the wider context of European modernism.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
