This article proposes a new reading of Philippe Buonarroti’s La Conspir- ation pour l’égalité, a classic work of communist thought. What emerges is a communist egalitarianism that is much more problematic than what is usually highlighted in the literature, because while it was clearly dedicated to establishing a society founded on the common ownership of the means of production, it was also very careful to create a society that could fully valorize individual differences. Lastly, Buonarroti’s text made a strong case for the contrast between communism – seen as a political democracy that was, historically, able to overcome the separation between State and civil society – and economics, which, in its various forms (from laissez-faire to statist), was regarded as the ideology of a new oligarchy based on money and political power.

Abstract
This article proposes a new reading of Philippe Buonarroti’s La Conspir- ation pour l’égalité, a classic work of communist thought. What emerges is a communist egalitarianism that is much more problematic than what is usually highlighted in the literature, because while it was clearly dedicated to establishing a society founded on the common ownership of the means of production, it was also very careful to create a society that could fully valorize individual differences. Lastly, Buonarroti’s text made a strong case for the contrast between communism – seen as a political democracy that was, historically, able to overcome the separation between State and civil society – and economics, which, in its various forms (from laissez-faire to statist), was regarded as the ideology of a new oligarchy based on money and political power.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
